Let’s be honest, the F40 M135i and F44 M235i xDrive are far more capable than the badge and spec sheet suggest. On paper they’re “hot hatches” and “compact coupés”. In the real world, they’re weapons: xDrive traction, sharp chassis and a very serious 2.0-litre turbo engine under the bonnet.

But you’ve probably already noticed it – that slightly muted response when you first squeeze the throttle, the way the power delivery feels a bit capped up top. That’s BMW and the emissions/marketing departments holding the car back.

At MSL Performance in Birmingham, this is exactly the kind of thing we live for. We don’t deal in generic, email-order maps. Every car that comes onto our dyno gets a custom calibration tailored to your fuel, your hardware and how you actually drive. Think of it as a bespoke suit for your B48 – everything sharper, cleaner and more responsive, without sacrificing reliability.


Find Your Perfect Level of Power

Every driver, and every build, is different. That’s why we offer a clear tuning path for your M135i or M235i – from a refined OEM+ transformation at Stage 1 to a more serious, hardware-supported Stage 2 setup.


Stage 1: The “OEM+ But Faster” Transformation

Stage 1 is ideal if you want your car to feel like it should have from the factory – the same usability and manners, just with far more urgency everywhere in the rev range.

On the standard hardware, we recalibrate the engine management to optimise boost, ignition and torque control. The result is a car that feels lighter on its feet, more eager to respond and much stronger in-gear.

  • How it feels:

    • Sharper throttle response and reduced lag

    • Noticeably harder mid-range shove

    • Strong, clean pull right through to the top end

  • The Result:

    • Gains of around 30 bhp

    • Gains of around 35 lb-ft of torque over stock

  • What you need:

    • Completely stock car is fine

    • A quality panel filter (e.g. K&N) is recommended but not essential

This is the perfect choice if you daily the car and want a big step up in performance without changing the character or adding any extra noise or drama under the bonnet.


Stage 2: When You Want It to Feel Properly Fast

Stage 2 is where the B48 in your M135i or M235i really comes alive. By adding a less restrictive exhaust setup and improving charge-air control, we’re able to run a more aggressive calibration safely and repeatably.

Freeing up the exhaust side allows the turbo to work more efficiently, reducing back-pressure and keeping exhaust gas temperatures in check. Combined with our custom mapping, that translates into a much more serious hit of performance.

  • How it feels:

    • Stronger, more insistent push right from the mid-range

    • Power holds on far better towards the top of the rev range

    • Noticeably more urgent overtakes – especially from 3rd gear upwards

  • The Result:

    • Up to around 50 bhp gain over stock (depending on hardware, fuel quality and overall condition)

    • A healthy, noticeable increase in torque across the rev range

  • What you need:

    • High-flow downpipe (sports cat or decat, depending on your local regulations)

    • Performance panel filter or intake preferred

Stage 2 is the sweet spot if you want your F40/F44 to feel genuinely quick even against much more expensive machinery, while still retaining factory driveability and refinement when you’re just cruising.
